Is there a separate credit bureau for medical debts?
No. There are three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and all debt is reported to these credit bureaus.
If I pay a bill that has been reported to a credit bureau will it automatically be removed from my credit?
No. It it required to be reflected as paid in full; however, the reporting party has the discretion to determine whether or not to remove the item from the credit bureau.
If the insurance company does not cover my claim who is responsible for the debt?
You are ultimately responsible to pay for any goods/services that you receive. Any issues regarding coverage or payment is between the insurance company and the insured.
Does medical debt affect my credit score?
Yes. All debt may have an impact on your credit score.
If I am on my parent's insurance and I am 18 or older, who is responsible for the debt?
You are ultimately responsible for the debt if you are 18 or older unless your parents have a power of attorney or guardianship that allows them to make financial decisions on your behalf. For specific situations, please contact your attorney for further information.

Generally speaking, it is up to the discretion of the business that owns the debt to allow a third party, when you provide authorization, to discuss your debt. See HIPAA regulations, if applicable.

Anyone may pay the debt; however, the responsible party should contact the agency to inform them that a third party will be making the payment.
Can a collection agency charge me collection fees?
Yes, if an agreement has been signed between you and original creditor that states if an account is turned over to a collection agency that you will be responsible to pay collection costs.

What is my responsibility towards a debt for my minor children if I am divorced?
Both parents are 100% responsibile for any services received for their minor children, unless they are emancipated.
